A 29-year-old British woman who took up an active outdoors lifestyle to cope with a cancer diagnosis has died after falling from a 100m cliff.

Ruth Holdway fell when looking for a tunnel behind a waterfall on the Atlantic island of Madeira, the Daily Mail reported.

She had failed to return back to the accommodation where her and her parents Paul and Kathleen were staying after going on a walking expedition.

Her body was discovered by police the next day after her parents reported her missing.

Her final actions were pieced together from photographs taken from her camera.

Ms Holdway didn't let the diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2003 stop her from pursuing an active outdoors lifestyle, her parents said.

"She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma when she was younger, but she managed to turn a negative into a positive by organised fundraising events for cancer charities," her mother said.

"We now want to turn the negative of her death into a positive by remembering her for all the good things she did during her lifetime."

Her parents said that she was a canoeing enthusiast as well as a water polo player, climber and cross-country skier.
