A teen has been fatally strangled after her scarf got caught in a go-kart.

Suzanne Cornwell died when her knitwear became tangled in the vehicle's engine.

A staff member at the Cambridgeshire Raceway track in eastern England had allegedly invited Suzanne and her friends onto the circuit after closing time to impress a new girlfriend, The Sun newspaper reports.

Track marshal Andy Kilvin, 24, let the six teenagers have free reign of the circuit after hours without ensuring any safety regulations were followed, raceway secretary Phil Meakins told the newspaper.

"He turned off the CCTV for the whole site before letting his girlfriend and five friends on to the track," The Sun quoted Mr Meakins as saying.

"All drivers have to wear race suits and helmets and they certainly wouldn't have been allowed to drive wearing a scarf ... you can't even wear facial jewellery on the track."

Those close to Suzanne have described her as an "absolutely gorgeous girl".

A mother of one of Suzanne's friends, Diane Rason, told The Sun paramedics worked frantically to save her after the accident.

"They got to her and put her in the recovery position straight away ... she had gone blue but she was still breathing ... they thought she was going to be OK," she said.

"She was a really lovely beautiful girl and very genuine ... I understand from many of the other kids that she was excelling in college and looking forward to going to university."

Kilvin has been sacked by Cambridgeshire Raceway and is facing legal action by his former employer.

A police spokesperson said it was not conducting a criminal probe into Suzanne's death and any investigation would be a matter for local authorities.
