Pop star Jessica Simpson has been forced to deny an affair between her and golfer Tiger Woods after reports surfaced in the US.

Simpson told her Twitter followers the front page story linking her and Woods together was "a lie!".

"Can't believe that I'm on the cover of Star magazine with Tiger Woods, what a JOKE!," Simpson tweeted.

"The 'Shocking Inside Story' is (insert drumroll) A LIE!"

Tabloid magazine Star claims when 33-year-old Woods met Simpson during the AT&T Pro-Am golf event last July and the pair became close and swapped phone numbers and email addresses.

Simpson, 29, was at the event in Maryland with her then-boyfriend, American football star Tony Romo.

Star quoted an unnamed source as saying "Tiger liked what he saw and let her know it".

Simpson's management declined to comment on the story but her tweet effectively poured water on the story.

Simpson, who broke up with Romo not long after the golfing event, has since been linked to Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan.
